Residents of Abonkor water land, a suburb of Tema New Town go through terrible situations even to the extent of rendering some homeless during rainy season.
Even though the people in that community experience the worse of flooding when it rains, the current flood is a result of drainage under construction which leads to the sea.
As a result of the flood, the businesses in that area have collapsed. Information gathered by the New Cencord was that the processing of fish is one of the main businesses in the area. Other businesses include petty trading.
In an interview with one of the fishmongers, she narrated her story about the issue. She said “about a year ago, my fuel (firewood), money, and other properties were carried away by the water. The oven which I used to the smoke fish got destroyed.”
The News Team had to battle with mosquitoes as a result of stagnant water that breeds a lot of mosquitoes. The stagnant water gets stagnated in the area for a long time before it dries as there is no passage for the water.
The people in the community are calling on the authorities to come to their aid especially in this era of COVID-19.
