The Electoral Commission (EC) has commended the security agencies for their role in providing security during the by-election that took place at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency last week.

It would be recalled that exactly four hours after voting started on Thursday, within the constituency, The Chronicle reported that gunshots were fired at the La Bawaleshie Presby School, which was a voting center in the constituency.

This led to several people sustaining injuries. The victims were later transferred to the Legon and 37 Military Hospitals for treatment.

Addressing a news conference in Accra on Friday, the Chairperson, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensah congratulated the work done by the security agencies for providing their services in all voting centers within Constituency.

She, however, said since their role in the society is to ensure public peace and security, “I think they could have done better to ensure law and order at the polling station. I honestly think that things could have been managed better,” she said.

According to her, the EC put in place adequate measures by writing formal letters to the Ghana Police Service and the Bureau of National Investigations and discussions were held about the locations of all polling stations and how to ensure law and order by the security personnel who would be deployed at the various centers.

She was, therefore, hopeful that in future, per the lessons learnt, they would re-strategise and make sure such sad incidences do not occur again.

Tackling the issue of her staff and machinery, she said a number of training activities were organised for their 564 electoral officers who were deployed to the 137polling stations to equip them with knowledge on how to use the machinery, get acquainted with electoral laws, how to interact with voters, among others.

Mrs. Mensah, however, stated that her office is pleased with the outcome of the reports which came out in all polling centers in the constituency and also congratulated their officials who took part in the election.
